Rise of the Drone

I’ve always been fascinated with flight. Being a pilot now is outside realm of reasonable possibility for me. My introduction to  flight was a YouTube video several years ago. I was immediately taken by the idea of aerial photography and videography.  However, the idea of owning one was a bit more out of reach. I’m a blue-collar guy; I’m 35 years old; I’ve been married for 13 years; I have a 9-year-old daughter;  There was no way to justify spending over 1,000 dollars on what my wife would surely label a “toy”.  So I continued watching videos of other guys having a blast flying around numerous tourist sites all around the world. Taking pictures from  vantage points only available to actual pilots.

Last year, The DJI Phantom 4 was released. It is cutting edge in the world of drones. Fitted with an HD camera that shoots video in 4K, its perfect for getting the professional looking video we all love to see.Well Priced at about 1,400 dollars, it also is well out of my price range.

The good news

As it goes with most electronics these days, the price of the older model went down significantly. While everyone is drooling over the Latest and greatest, we cheapskates start looking over the older models. I wasted no time, I paid an unbelievable 499.00 for the DJI Phantom 3. And its sooo dope. Not a toy at all. This thing is a beast.  It flies itself using GPS positioning. You just tell it where, and it goes.//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=tf_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=offthedomedom-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B013U0F6EQ&asins=B013U0F6EQ&linkId=83e000bccb0cb5bf75a048ac1b6650d2&show_border=false&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066C0&bg_color=FFFFFF“>Click here to get one even cheaper.

You may be asking why I writing a blog post about my drone. I asked myself the same question. Im not being paid for this, although im not closed to the idea. The truth is, its about perspective.  As a fairly introverted person, I enjoy the solitude that nature offers. The view from the top of Mountain is always a treat. The drone give me that view without all the walking and climbing and sweating. I Also enjoy the cityscape. Sunsets on skyscrapers can be really beautiful.  My Wife is from Bronx, NY and whenever we visit, my favorite thing to do is sit in a park sipping coffee and watching people go by. The Drone’s perspective allows me to observe my surroundings without interaction. Many people prefer this perspective. This drone offers much more as well. 1. I’m thinking of getting a drone as well to take my photography to a whole new level, but can’t decide on a model and can’t make up my mind to commit to the cost. $500 is a pretty penny!

      1. Yeah, I figured it would make a great companion for the hiking trails. I’m sure there are much better shots up high. Send me a link any time you decide to post some of the pictures you got from it. I’d love to see them!

      3. Haha. No prob. I’m an amateur photographer, so any new angle or device will excite me. It’s good that you’re experimenting with that. Sounds like a great, albeit expensive, hobby.
